Contains a handwritten journal of Harris' detailed reminiscences on the 143rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment's involvement in the battles of Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, North Anna River, the Wilderness, and Petersburg. Avery Harris joined the 143rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment in August 1862, and was appointed to Company B at Camp Luzern in October 1862. He participated in the battles of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville in 1863, and was promoted to Corporal in August 1863. Harris fought in the battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, North Anna River, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg during 1864. In July 1864 he was promoted to Sergeant.
